The Children In The Hospital Program

A guide for children, parents and caregivers

Why is it needed?
Not every child or family has the time or ability to gain the insights and skills to successful navigate a trip through a serious health issue. These programs offer insights and skills that assist the child; family and caregivers ease the transition and lower their anxiety during their journey through the health care system.

What is it?
This program contains several programs within the overall program. The first of the programs is In the Hospital by Peter Alsop Ph.D. and Bill Harley. it is made up of a CD and book. This program on the CD for kids and adults is delivered in a story and song format. The listener is transported through 12 Songs woven into the story. The book supports the CD. It is for adults and supports the program by guiding the reader offering insights and potential conversations points to have with the children and their siblings.

The other programs by Dr. Bett Sanders LP and Dr. Chuck Cummings Imagine Yourself to Sleep assist the children learn how to relax, fall asleep and better manage stress and anxiety in the process.

Benefit to those that use it
The Child gains a greater sense of control over themselves, and some insights into the how's and why's of their journey. Moreover, they will experience reduced fear and anxiety due to their increased understanding of the process.

The Family also gains valuable skills on how to deal with children when they are in the hospital. Moreover, they gain a more compliant child who better understands what the overall process is. This decreases everyone’s stress. This can for example lead to better testing and less retesting.

When does it start?
We have negotiated a very fair price with the developers of these excellent children’s programs (see reviews on links to this page for full reviews). The next step is to gain the funding so that every child in Canada faced with a serious health issue can access a complete set of this material.

How can you help?
We are seeking corporate and individual donors to assist us raise the funds to make this a reality.

Our initial goal is to raise $300,000 to help us start this program for the Ontario market.

Yes, this goal is aggressive. Once in place these programs are timeless and should have decades of use for several generations of children. Buying them, their families and caregivers more peace of mind.

Next steps
These products lend themselves to animation. So, each program over time would be animated shortening the learning curve for the children. Plus very importantly each program could then have subtitles in a child's native language to assist them and their whole family.

To recap these program offers children, their families, caregivers and educators a "mental health kit." These kits assist the child, siblings, family and care givers to better cope and deal with the hospitalization process and the intensity of the experience.

Who We Are

Board of Advisors

Michael Ballard Chair
Michael is the president of Resiliency for Life.
He became interested in resiliency since he had a chronic illness diagnosis in his teens. Then he was incorrectly told there was nothing he could do to help fight the illness. Nothing to do for a cure perhaps. However, there was much he could have done for managing himself and the illness emotionally and physically.

Years later he survived and then thrived after two rounds of cancer and one surgery that did not "work" forcing a late night emergency surgery. That journey lasted over seven years. Michael had so many treatments he joked that "If I got frequent treatment points, by now I'd qualify for a tummy tuck or perhaps a face lift by now!"

Later his then seven year old daughter would benefit from his extensive experience when she successful was able to emotionally navigate through a brain tumour treatment and surgery. She is now very health and doing wonderfully.

Michael has had a clean bill of health now for over 18 years. He has been leading Resiliency for Life programs for the past seventeen years.

The In The Hosptial Program

This program was developed by multi nominated and award winning child and adult entertainers Peter Alsop, Ph.D. and Bill Harley. They developed the program with Diane Grimm, R.N. ADN, CLI, a nurse at the Children's Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle, WA and Penny Pefley, R.N. ADN. who is alos a nurse at the Children's Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle WA, It was developed to assist children, families and caregivers through serious health care issues. The journey children can face when confronted by a serious health issue can be a very frightening time. This program reduces the stress and anxiety the child, the family and the care givers can feel through this insightful and very helpful program.

Imagine Yourself to Sleep Programs

The Progams
These programs are designed to help children learn how to relax and or fall a sleep in a creative, playful and peaceful way. It begins with directions for relaxation to calm them and then guides them to engage their imagination to relax through peaceful imagery, music and sounds of nature. Many parents and caregivers report falling asleep while using them with their children.

Our Testing
Our testers ranged from 3 - 12 in age and they all very much enjoyed the program. Many of the parents of the children also enjoyed the program as well. The program says it's for ages 4 - 10. However we found many children and parents thought it was great for almost every age.

The particpants where asked to rate
these programs on the following criteria.

Over listening quality - first impressions
Repetitive listening quality - after 10 listens
Did these programs work for you?
Could you use the skills learned without listening to the program?

The results was that all the children (and their parents) gave these four programs two thumbs up. Yes some had favourites. But that is the great thing with four choices to listen to. Parents and chidren alike enjoyed these programs. To us that tells us quite a bit about the high quality of the design and delivery of these wonderful programs.

Children deserve to be well rested. Parents and teachers every where deserve a well rested child to deal with. These programs are a wonderful way to help make that happen.
